I still ask this question to myself on a regular basis. When I was a little kid I thought of many things I wanted to do such as a paleontologist, a police officer etc.......I mean honestly how many kids or teens say they want to work in an office? Would I work in an office again - absolutely! What is important is being happy with what you are doing. None of us want to work with the person who absolutely hates their job/life but none of us wants to be that person either. I know many of you often think to yourself when can I retire, or what if I just left my job, what else can I do, or what do I want to be when I grow up (I don't care how old you are either). Part of me travelling is being able to explore those options. Right now there are dozens of options I am looking at but sometimes it is a matter of age....A lot of countries throughout the world being between the ages of 18-30 getting a working visa is as easy as booking a flight but once you hit that wonderful age of 30 countries become harder to get visas in.
So what am I getting at with all of this? Either get a piece of paper or open up a spreadsheet and have 2 columns and write what you like about your job and what you hate about your job........maybe you should do this from home I do not want anyone's boss to see and you getting in trouble or having funny looks. Now take a good hard look at this. Now the next one I want you to do is what is my dream job - and what is stopping me? Of course everyone will say money is the number one reason blah blah blah. Yes we all know money is needed but the most important thing is priorities. Wait a second what do I mean by that? When I was living in Calgary I spent money on two things mostly (excess money after bills) outdoor gear and traveling. I had an old tube tv why well it worked and tv was not a priority for me. At times I did not have cable or internet at home as they were not a priority to me that was a savings of 60-100 a month or 720-1200 a year so around the cost of a return flight to Europe, or a National Park Pass in Canada, 3 ski cards, 10 nights backcountry camping pass, 3 days skiing, and money left over to buy some outdoor clothes. One expensive starbucks coffee a day 5 days a week around 1,300 a year or 2 weeks in Cuba in late November/Early December.
Sometimes I do not even know where I am going with these until I start writing! :)
What it all boils down to are what are your priorities. My priorities this year are traveling, enjoying life and trying to figure what I want to be when I grow up - well actually I already know I want to be the person who can look in the mirror and say my life is better than your vacation.....
