I did this trip in January before I left on a month long trip.
Sometimes it is hard to think about what to write this 2 day road trip had everything bad weather, Rotorua, Hobbiton, Lake Taupo, Huka Falls, natural hot springs, Redwood Forest, Lake Tarawera, mud pools, and an awesome steak dinner god this was tasty. This is the trip where I learned how to drive manual on the wrong side of the road. It is great when you know a local as they can take you to places that will not cost anything.
One of the areas I saw was Lake Tarawera. Mount Tarawera blew its top in the 1886 and buried the local village with approx 180 people and the pink and white terraces which were a large tourist attraction. They were terraces of natural hotsprings, each pool being a different temperature. The pools were a different colours (pink or white due to algae and sulphur).

In Rotorua there are stinky sulphur smelling pools throughout the town. |
geothermal capital of New Zealand underground volcanos
Smells like rotten eggs |
Yummy surf and turf dinner! |
I
was shown the green lake (sacred) and blue lake. The blue lake you can
go boating and swim in but the green lake is sacred and there is no
access to the lake. |
Redwood trees |
| |
Natural hotsprings - it was locals only until Lonely planet found it |
Neat mud pools. You would not be able to survive them as they would act like quicksand and are too hot for people. |
Huka falls |
