Christmas in New Zealand is very different from back home in the sense of traditions. On Christmas day Kiwis will either bring a picnic and go to the beach or have a BBQ. I spent Christmas day at Piha Beach on the west side of the Auckland region. The sand here is black and thick, the waves are really strong, the scenery is quite beautiful and it is a very well known popular beach.
I was given a special insight to a Kiwi Christmas and was spoiled with strawberries & grapes dipped in chocolate, various Kiwi biscuits & chocolates, sparkling juice, bacon & egg pie, salad and the most important thing.....beer!
It was a nice change for Christmas with great company (although I do miss skiing on Christmas).
Who knows what next Christmas will hold you never know what could happen although it is;

Some additional information on Piha Beach - Pictured below you will see me standing by a flag. Flags are setup to show the "safe zone" for swimming. The waves are so strong in this area there is a reality show filmed here called Piha Rescue. If they have to do a rescue it is with a boat and any people will be stranded on the rocks.
Apparently this Santa really loves his job! |
